Dear Abby: I am a pastor and I believe that our pets will join us in heaven

Dear ABBY: “My Cat Is Missing in Georgia” (June 20) was told by his Catholic friend that his cat would not be joining him in the afterlife. I have been an ordained pastor for 27 years.

Last summer my cat, Fred, who had been with me for 11 years, died. I claim no deeper or higher relationship with God than anyone else, but I do know this: The Bible says that God is a God of love—indeed, that God IS love.

I know no dearer companions than pets. Dogs and cats express their love for us humans much better than most of us humans do for each other. I also know that Fred, who just showed up at my house one night and adopted me, taught me many lessons about how to love and be loved.

I am certain that God sent Fred into my life to prepare me for marriage after 55 years of being single. I am a better husband (and pastor) because of Fred. Therefore, I can’t imagine God not inviting, even welcoming Fred into some kind of heavenly afterlife, whatever that looks like. Love never diesand I don’t believe that the love relationship between an animal and their human ends in death. – PASTOR STEVE IN WEST VIRGINIA

DEAR PASTOR STEVE: Thanks for reinforcing the sentiments I expressed about Missing. Mail poured in after that letter. All this rejected the opinion of the friend of “Missing”. Read further:

Dear ABBY: When my daughters were growing up, we had a German Shepherd named Lady. We often had our Catholic priest over for dinner and, one evening, the girls asked him if Our Lady would go to heaven when she died. He responded by asking them, “Do you want her to be there when you get there?” “Of course!” they replied. He then replied, “We are told that heaven is everything and more than we want or can imagine. If you love the Lady there, she will be there.” – INSIDE MICHIGAN

Dear ABBY: I am a seminary trained, theologically educated, ordained Protestant minister in a large mainline church in the middle of the Bible Belt. I would like to tell “Munges” that the Bible has many verses of Scripture that describe animals in heaven. Many people who have died and come back to life have written about their experiences and said they have seen their long-dead pets on the other side. I want The Missing to know that I’m sure a happy and whimsical reunion awaits him when his earthly life is over. — PEACEFUL PROTESTANT MINISTER

Dear ABBY: It is a story about an old gentleman who lost his life in an unexpected accident, which also took the life of his very old dog. They then found themselves on a long path which finally led to a tall and beautifully decorated gate guarded by an official looking man with a magnificent gray beard and a long white robe .

“This is heaven,” said the bearded man. “Come inside. We have been waiting for you. But you will have to let your dog outside. No animals allowed.” The old man thought about it for a moment before saying, “No problem. We will keep going.”

Finally, they came to a small roundabout, where they met a naked old man with a broad smile, sitting on a bench. “You passed the final test,” the smiling man said, pushing open the scroll. “My name is Peter. Welcome to heaven!”

“But… I thought we passed heaven a few hours ago. They didn’t let me bring my dog in,” said the old gentleman sadly. “No,” replied Peter, “he was the devil you brought back there, trying to tempt you one last time. Deep down, you knew better. Pearly gates or no, how could it be a place of heaven if you can’t bring your dog?” – JEFF IN OHIO

Dear JEFF: If I remember correctly, that exciting story was written by Rod Serling and featured in his series, The Twilight Zone.
